Imagine a space where every voice is heard, where the invisible threads that bind your family are strengthened with understanding and compassion. That space exists, and it’s right here at Psych Choices. Our family therapy sessions are more than just conversations; they’re transformative experiences designed to promote healing, growth and lasting bonds.
Family therapy, or family counseling, not only helps family members learn to get along better with one another, but also can help individuals in the family change their behaviors and begin to feel better in many ways. It is also an important part of treatment when someone in the family may be struggling with substance abuse, eating disorders, behavior problems or mental illness.
A family may include any two or more individuals who are related or who live in a close relationship with one another. A family session may include married or unmarried parents and their children, divorced parents, stepparents, grandparents, adult siblings, foster parents or any other kind of family group.
Most insurance plans will cover family therapy as a part of treatment for the insured individual. The cost of family therapy sessions is about the same as for an individual session.
A family therapist is trained to be as objective as possible, to avoid taking sides, but rather to help each individual in the family better understand each of the others. In treatment, family members may learn parenting strategies, communication and problem-solving skills. They may learn to understand and empathize better with one another, and may gain insight into themselves.
Recognizing the signals that your family might need support is the first step towards healing and growth. Here are some signs that your family could benefit from our therapy sessions:
If any of these signs resonate with your family’s experience, consider reaching out to Psych Choices of the Delaware Valley. Our compassionate therapists are ready to support your family’s journey towards a more harmonious life.
Family therapy involves multiple family members working with a therapist to communicate more effectively, solve family problems, understand and handle special family situations and create a better functioning home environment. Techniques may include talking therapy, behavior modeling, and exercises to practice at home, all tailored to the family’s specific needs.
Any family going through challenges that they find difficult to overcome on their own should consider family therapy. This can include life transitions like divorce or the death of a loved family member, behavioral issues with children or teens, mental health concerns, chronic illness, substance abuse or any persistent conflict within the family that affects the members’ well-being.
While family therapy is designed to address issues within the family system, individual members can certainly benefit from the process. The therapy can improve communication skills, personal coping strategies and understanding of family dynamics that can help an individual in their interactions within and outside the family.
The duration of family therapy varies widely depending on the family’s unique situation, goals and the specific issues being addressed. Some families may see improvements within a few sessions, while others may engage in therapy for several months or even longer. The therapist will work with the family to set realistic expectations and goals for therapy.
It’s not uncommon for one or more family members to be hesitant or refuse to participate in therapy. In such cases, therapy can still proceed with the willing participants. The therapist can work with the family to find ways to engage the reluctant member(s), and the therapy itself can improve the overall family dynamic, which may encourage participation in the future. Individual sessions may also be recommended as a complement to the family sessions.
